Define "cool" :)
There aren't many features in 6.1 that you can't get with an APAR to 5.4 at the
moment.
Cool will be the SSI release when it comes (imnsho).

5.4 runs just fine on a z196 (with PTF).

ty,

We already have 5.4 at level 1.

We just want to take advantage of some of the "cool" features of 6.1 and
position for a z196.

Nope, sorry.
Upgrade the machine to a z10 or install 5.4
5.4 actually has a longer service life than 6.1, FWIW.

I have just installed z/VM 61 level 2 on a 2094 which I believe is a z9.

It is not surpiseing that when I try to ipl I get a wait state code of 9030
because it does not like the architecture level.

I don't suppose there is any way of virtualizing aournd this.
