IBM and Computer Associates (CA) offer Service Machines to manage tape Libraries, and Mounting tapes in the background for user requests. There are DFSMSRM commands to mount tapes. You might user VM Tape Manager in conjunction with DFSMS/RMM to get a complete solution to managing volumes in the library.
