Honestly, you should not be planning on doing this kind of thing (editing the 
directory source directly).

Once DIRMAINT has control, you're much better off letting it do it's thing, and 
making your changes transactional. You stand a very good chance of shooting 
yourself in the head by messing with the directory file outside. I can say from 
experience: you WILL mess up, and you WILL regret it. There's nothing that you 
can't change in a directory entry via DIRM commands these days, and the more 
human intervention you introduce, the more you increase the probability of 
hurting yourself badly.

Let DIRMAINT do it's job.
