I usually do my 2nd level directory update from a user other than MAINT so 
that would not be a problem 

but yes if you get a rc of 0 instead of 5 then you can enter a DIRECTXA 
using the correct USER DIRECT and be back in business.

ty, Rich,  for the "heads up". 

If, perchance, the 1st Level directory gets updated by mistake instead of 
the second Level directory, ie you get RC 0, can you just do another 
DIRECTXA with the 1st Level directory source to back it out as long as you 
don't logoff, or is it too late. 

Haven't done it yet.  Just want to know the recovery options first.

Note that a non zero rc is correct here.  If you get zero, STOP!!! - You
just overwrote the live directory.  You want ISTR a rc=6 indicating that
the directory you wrote is NOT the current system directory.
