George,

OK, you still had a had a long, enlightening, "educational experience" -
learning many new and unplanned along the way. It was not a total loss.

Now the next step... eliminating the laptop/workstation download and
upload altogether!

Using the CMS FTP client and z/VM's TCPIP, you can download files directly
to the 500 disk (or any other location) right from CMS! You'll learn some
new things and save astonishing amounts of time compared to FTPing a file
to your laptop and then FTPing it again to z/VM. That double FTP is not
what Wrigley meant in their ad for Doublemint gum: "Double your pleasure,
double your fun!".

I leave installing and configuring TCPIP and the CMS FTP client up to you
and the IBM manuals. Getting the company firewalls opened to permit such
may be the more difficult challenge, but it is well worth the effort. Once
you get FTP working from CMS (the FTPSERVE client is only used by those
attempting to connect to your z/VM system, not by outbound CMS FTP client
services), you will be much more productive, and save uncountable hours
and headaches.

One excellent tip shared repeatedly by Alan Altmark: make friends with
your network geeks. That is outstanding advice, and has saved me even
more uncountable hours.

Hold everything, I think Mike just led me to the problem.

I believe I uploaded a COR file from my desktop instead of the 5407RSU
file downloaded from SHOPZ.

The difference in attributes is a "dead giveaway":

9357956P SHIPTFSS T1 F 1024 13790 3448 9/23/10 17:34:59
               What I uploaded
5402RSU1 SERVLINK T1 V 65535 1118126 29466 12/05/08 10:40:44
           Previous 5402 RSU

And looking at my download folder on my desktop SHIPRSU1 has been left
behind there.

Really sorry for wasting everyone's time such a stupid mistake.

But thank you all for all your help.
