This trouble can be reproduced by doing as follows.

I think it's a bug in gvim. vim works fine with me. So it's better to fix

problem in gvim finally.
But I agree with your usage. You don't like to insert the preedit text into
the
committed strings in the specific applications.
Yes, probably PreeditPosition also can avoid your problem but I think the
scim option
"Embed Preedit String into client window" would be better.
Now I'd separate the word 'over-the-spot' looks from the GUI implementation
and
over-the-spot seems like a legacy way.
Certainly, GTK2 does not support "--xim-preedit position"
It depends on each input method framework(and maybe X11 modules) and
probably I think
we still don't have to support PreeditPosition.
