You're right. I filled a bug about the same feature but with pinyin, and
some people told me to go have a look at RIME
(https://code.google.com/p/rimeime/) which provides that feature and much
more actually.
It also works with Zhuyin, which is enjoyable!
Note: if you're using Archlinux, there is a English installation process
