The most xmodmap feature can be available in XKB options.
E.g. caps:swapescape can swap ESC and Caps Lock.
So currently using XKB option is recommended.

Not sure how your desktop can configure the default XKB options.
If you use GNOME desktop, 'gnome-control-center' or 'gnome-tweak-tool' can configure the XKB options and ibus 1.5 uses the session XKB options. I think ibus 1.4 won't be updated for XKB.

If you need Xmodmap, ibus-xkb checks it instead of ibus.
