I agree it's hard to implement to handle trigger keys in kimpanel but the
plan is to simplify ibus-daemon and export the handling trigger keys to
other UIs so probably we cannot provide the fallback trigger handling.
Now ibus is also integrated in gnome-shell and gnome-settings-daemon
handles trigger keys and we have the plan to show the switcher UI in
gnome-shell side:

I wish to implement it in kimpanel with QT too but have no time...
ibus 1.5 is not compatible with 1.4 in this point.
