My vala is 0.20.0.
I tried building with vala 0.18.1 and it doesn't segfault like you said.
I tested this time by running ibus-daemon and ibus-ui-gtk3 in remote SSH
session and setting DISPLAY=:0
If you say this is a vala bug, I'll report it to Gentoo bugzilla then,
