Is there any way to check if the capability is supported on the current
client?
Probably I don't understand the question.
In xterm, the preedit text is shown in ibus lookup table.
In gedit, the preedit text is shown in the application window.
So the engine does not have to know the capability?
ibus-setup shows "Embed preedit text in application window" option for gvim.
IBusEngine emits the signal of "set-capabilities" but I'm not sure if it is
related with your problem.
