The question I have for you is this:  is the entire strut moving, or is the 
play in the shaft within a strut that is stable?  If the former is true, you 
will need to replace your cutlass bearing.  It's a bit of a job.  I just had 
mine replaced due to alot of play in the shaft, and had to drop the rudder just 
to get the shaft out.
