Thanks Judy,

IMHO USCG should bill them for the search. Imagine on a questionable vessel
they only had one non-DSC VHF on board.

The next step will be interesting. Pismo is still well south of the most
hazardous conditions in their passage. The USCG can advise but I don't think
they can compel them to wise up even though the boat has no CE rating.

When my brother went south the other two skippers he was transiting with
convinced him that the area off Big Sur was nothing special so he ignored my
concerns. One skipper was relieved of his dingy off by way of the seas
tearing the stern cleat out of is transom but everybody had a rough day of
it. On the way north they called twice to confirm they had the route planned
correctly.

They're okay. News story from the USG website below:

SAN PEDRO, Calif. - An HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station
Sacramento located two missing boaters and their sailing vessel in good
condition Monday afternoon approximately four miles off the coast of Pismo
Beach, Calif.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach first received a call Sunday
from the family of 21-year-old Zebulon Tryon reporting that they had lost
contact with Tryon after he departed Avalon Harbor at Catalina Island on
June 5. Tryon and his friend, 18-year-old Chris Reuter, were aboard a white,
27-foot 1973 Coronado Sailing vessel and were due to sail from Avalon Harbor
to Santa Cruz Harbor.

After searching an area of over 2,200 square miles, the Hercules aircraft
crew spotted the sailing vessel around 4 p.m. Monday approximately four
miles off the coast of Pismo Beach.

There are no injuries reported and the vessel is in good working condition
and is being escorted by San Luis Harbor Patrol into Port San Luis, Calif.
where Coast Guard Station Morro Bay will conduct a post-search and rescue
boarding to determine the cause of the vessel's communication failure.

The Coast Guard urges boaters to always equip their boats with GPS, a marine
VHF radio, and 406 Mhz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).

Local news is reporting a couple of inexperienced sailors are heading uphill
off the California coast. Wow! I don't give them much of a chance for
success.

Zebulon Tryon, 21, and Chris Reuter, a man of about 25, departed from Avalon
Harbor Friday on a white, 27-foot 1973 Coronado headed for Santa Cruz, CA.

I thought I'd see if any SOCAL members recognize this pair.

I haven't been tracking the weather but 50 knot plus winds and very heavy
seas are the daily norm off Big Sur this time of year. Transiting this area
is typically done 5 - 7 miles offshore to avoid the field of see mounts off
Big Sur a dry sea mount. Add the afternoon winds at Hurricane Pt. and the
ill informed don't stand much of a chance.
