Tough question to answer, actually. If you know what's normal and notice a
change then that's clearly a sign to look for what's wrong. My diesel (M-15
?) vibrates the cockpit quite readily but I know my yard considers it to be
in great shape. If I'm shoeless at the wheel the engine rattles my vision at
low speeds :)

More telling is the exhaust. Ours does not smoke at all. If yours is
producing smoke (white or black) the engine may need remedial work.
