A word of caution about cutting down a "tired old 135" to make a storm jib...
Years ago I "scored" a tired, old, tiny storm jib -- and it ripped the first
time I used it in about 35 knots....

I found out the hard way that it's "penny-wise and pound-foolish" to
"economise" on a storm jib.  You'll be wasting your money, IMO, on a sail that
you won't be able to rely upon.

You can't make a good storm jib (less than 100%, usually around 65%) out of  a
135.  A stor,m jib has much flatter draft and much heavier weight cloth than a
135%.   Storm jibs take a beating -- tired old cloth won't be reliable.   Your
storm jib should be made of strong, heavy cloth., not tired old cloth.

Just my two cents.  Your mileage may vary,

I would not be afraid to use the 170 under appropriate conditions.? It is
summer on the Hudson, with typical Hudson light air.? It is not hard to
understand why the old river sloops were all gaff rigged.? They needed all the
sail they could carry much of the time.? With main, jib, and topsail options,
plus the ability to "scandalize" and reef the main, they could handle a wide
variety of wind conditions.

I have my 165 on the roller furler and my 135 down below in case it really
blows.? This is a new 165, so not blown out or overpowering. ? I have another
tired old 135 that I plan to have recut as a storm jib.

Stash the 170 in the dick box.

Use your 150 and your jib.

?

My 79 came with three headsails. A jib, 150 genoa and a 170 light air genoa. So
far in my sailing I have used my 150. Do mose folks carry the other sails all
the time? My boat is an Atomic 4 - so room is a little tight - where is the
best placed to stash these bags ?

Thanks

Derek.-
