Hi John,

Wing Tip is certainly a different configuration but here goes. The best I
can tell there are five possible sources of play in a C27 tiller helm.

The first and least likely is the loose hardware between the handle to the
SS tiller straps.

The second is a little more likely; a worn 5/16" bolt or enlarged holes
where the SS tiller straps are mounted to the tiller head included a worn
tiller head hole.

The third is a tiller head loose on the shaft.

The forth is a worn rudder tube bore letting the shaft tilt before turning.

The fifth and usually the worst to fix is a rudder tube that's broken loose
inside the rudder. There's a caulking seal at the top of the rudder that
should be refreshed every few years that is often ignored.

Subject: [IC27A] Sloppy Helm

I believe this has been discussed before, but I would like to? begin to
gather some info now and will act when the boat comes out in the fall, but
perhaps there are some adjustments I can make with the boat in the water.?
My helm is very sloppy.? Lots of play at the tiller before rudder movement
begins.? This is a 1975 SR rig.? Is there something I can tighten up on deck
and or what is the usual cause of this and what usually needs to be done?
