Joe, I think it depends on your expectations of what an autopilot will do. I have an older ST 1000, but I go sailing to sail, not sit back and enjoy the ride, so I only use the autopilot for short intervals, and only in certain conditions. Phil is correct about running in following seas, the ST 1000 is just too slow to respond. While hand steering, I find myself anticipating waves, and "pre-acting". I don't think any compass controlled pilot would work in those conditions. Generally I use the pilot while motoring, raising, lowering, and reefing sails, and when I want to do something else.
Again, because the pilot cannot anticipate, it does not do very well sailing high into the wind, so i ease off a bit and it does pretty well. It also does pretty well on a broad reach. Bottom Line...I would get another ST 1000 Bob Stockley Sundance #2436 --- In [email protected], "Joe McCary" <j...@...> wrote: > > Is anyone using the ST1000 on a Cat 27 or do we need the larger boat model? > > > > > > Joe McCary > > Aeolus II. #4795, West River, MD > > www.aeoluswestriver.net > > joe at photoresponse dot com > > > > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of > sharon speller > Sent: Tuesday, October 27, 2009 7:17 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [IC27A] Re: Any suggestions on a good, used autopilot (wheel) > > > > > > I was looking at the autohelm ST1000.
