Tony: The Shaefer 700 installed on my 1981 Standard Rig is a great solution. I am not racing my boat so a double tracked foil is not a requirement for me. I agree with Phil on all points, especially the ball bearing preference. His caution about reefing with a properly cut and designed sail vs simply furling a sail not designed to do so is accurate. It can quickly become dangerous... precisely what you are trying to avoid. That said, a furling system that operates properly is a real asset for the cruising sailor. Particularly while single handing.
I think Schaefer has changed the model # (to 7000?) but there remains a similar unit. Other manufacturers have great units too. Notably Harken, but there is a premium $ with their fine products.
