Yes, I used the wire/rope halyard, and attached the rope end to the messenger 
(you are right, it reverses the process). The area where the messenger line and 
the rope attached, even with the paper clip, stitches and tape it was not 
thicker than the rope diameter, besides I think the Vaseline did the trick! in 
my case it did not snag when it passed the sheave, it did required a bit of 
extra pulling (very very little) but no drama. Good luck
