Thanks Joe, sounds like a good solution. Last week while trying to pull the motor up through the rail I jammed the backstay tang into my forehead. Good thing I have a hard head but the blood kept running into my eyes when I was tacking and steering. What an inconvenience. Seems like the more my hairline retreats toward the back of my head, the more stuff I find to bang my head on. We had a great sail that day averaging 3 1/2 knots. >>> "Joe McCary" <[email protected]> 6/21/2010 12:25 PM >>>
I have NO experience with electric drive units, I have wondered about them and the efficiency and how long the batteries last. BUT I do have a possible solution to your dexterity problem. On my boat, an outboard model with a Honda 9.9 4 stroke I raise and lower the motor via some ropes. The PO installed this system and while it is not perfect, it does work. There is a line that runs down to the lock lever to pull it up. And there is a second line that goes down around the tilt area and comes back to the same lever to unlock the tilt. You pull one to unlock and the other to lock it. Then there is a third set of lines (1/4” with a double block on the stern rail and the other end attaches to the back of the engine cover. Once you unlock the tilt lever you pull the engine up until it locks into position. There is a cam cleat incase the tilt lock doesn’t engage. The engine does have remote controls so once lowered I can remotely start and shift and throttle the speed from the cockpit. I can NOT use the motor to steer (which leads to other problems). Joe McCary From: ic...@yahoogroups. Does anyone have experience with the electric motor conversion from Saildrive as a replacement for the inboard? I have a double rail on the stern that takes a lot of dexterity to crawl through to raise and lower the outboard on my previous inboard model C27. I have a big minn kota that I have used for that purpose AND it works great to push our dingy .... I wouldnt suggest it for any long passages though.
