My $0.02 worth: Encore has an outboard and we have traveled somewhere north of 2,000 nm off the California coast while motorsailing. That includes fourteen trips from Ensenada to Dana Point, a distance of about 120 nm. Just got back from a 100 mile trip to and around Catalina. Current power is a Tohatsu 6 four-stroke. It buzzes a little but it's not really that irritating. I know the prevailing wisdom is that more power is better, but the 6 performs well and is really stingy on gas (the last 52 nm of the Catalina trip used just over 4 gallons).
