Hi Judy,

>This will help to keep from driving his spine down
Interesting response about this horse. I would agree with some of his
answer and really like the way he offers his advice in a positive way and
would offer a few different ideas.
The rider is slightly 'starchy' in her back but to get her pelvis to neutral
isn't just about tipping her pelvis - she would then need to slightly
'float' her upper body forward to bring her shoulder in line with her hips.
I totally agree with the comment about the bit and bit suggestion but would
suggest that lowering a riders hands to lower the horse's head actually
causes more bracing through the base of the neck and puts the horse more on
the forehand. If she had a snaffle and slightly raised her hands - it is
more like think up with your hands than do it - it would help the horse
release the base of the neck and come more from behind. This technique in
itself is helpful with horses in stopping as well.
I don't agree with the use of spurs as is done with most of the clinicians
you see today. The concept of encouraging a horse to engage his belly
muscles is a good one but using spurs does it more in a reflexive - or knee
jerk - response than in showing the nervous system what it must do to engage
the belly to bring the back up. Peggy Cummings uses what she calls 'come on
come on' with an alternate leg signal, initiated in the thigh and carried
down through the calf, that is, IME, extremely effective and nicer for the
horse. I think it is interesting that it is often considered unkind to
carry a stick but wearing spurs is okay.
I will try and find time to put up some 'neutral pelvis' exercise photos but
have two newsletters I need to finish....
