>>>> IME a flying pace is quite a different feel than a Standardbred pace.
But, didn't Christine tell me that the first horse she ever rode flying pace on was her Standardbred back in Germany? I've known several off-the-track standardbreds, and there was about as much variation in their pleasure gaits as I've seen in Icelandic's - or within TWH, SSH, whatever, if you come right down to it. Some run walk, some rack, some tend towards a big trot. My friend and I were just talking about one that another friend now owns, he's got a lovely running walk. And isn't it true that a lot of the founding blood of the Racking Horse Association Standardbred? Wasn't that Rowdy Falcon, that amazing Racking Horse, all or mostly Standardbred? That sure looked like one smooth horse to me. I think how any gait feels depends as much on the individual horse as it does the breed - no, probably more. I have Icelandic's who remind me a lot of certain TWH when I ride them - while TWH Mac and Holly don't ride anything at all alike.
