>ok as I don“t have another breed to compare with here in Iceland >how are the gaits in other gaited breeds? do >people at daily basis use all 5 gears? or 4? >as we do in Icelandics?
Peruvians are typically ridden in walk or paso llano (square four beat gait), and for faster, sobreandando (stepping pace?). Some do a very fast unsuspended broken pace called an entrepaso. Some will do a fox trot under uneducated riders, and a true canter has to be taught. Some Peruvians can be taught to trot under saddle too, but few people want to. So the "gearing" is different than that of icelandics -- the horses are very lateral. > >I mean ok most gaited foals gaits when young (we >have exception of the rule here from the farm) >but then what happens then? > >do they always show soft gait at liberty until fully grown (lets say 4 yo) > >do they then only show soft gaits? (I mean the majority of the breed) > >do they soft gait at liberty most of the time >and still have a useful trot under saddle? Just the opposite -- many will trot at liberty (they paso llano too), but the weight of a rider brings the soft gaits to the fore. -- Lynn Kinsky, Santa Ynez, CA http://www.silcom.com/~lkinsky/
