No they are sort of the "audience" tho most of them are the other competitors who are not competing at the time, their wives and children. Its all day every day for four days and most of them bring four horses and ride a different one each brace because its very intensive and the horse really works hard! They could do the whole thing without the "gallery" but its really sort of a big activity people do with their horses. I thought it was a southern macho thing but then someone said they go to colorado and everything, which makes me wonder if they do all gaited horses in other areas like it is here in the south... I think a non gaited horse would have difficulty keeping up with the dog on the run, i think a trot would be too slow and a canter too fast... would be interesting to see if it could work tho...
