I don’t think many Icelandics have a head nod so it may not be so applicable
in that situation.  I have used mechanical type hackamores with Icelandics –
one from a company called Madco and the other from Mylar.  They both have a
place that you can put two reins – the top rein has no leverage and just
gives nose pressure (not meant to be low on the horse’s nose) – so you have
a way to balance the horses.  The bottom rein is a brake , should you need
it.

 

I think the use of the sidepull versus the rope halter is fairly debatable
and about personal experience rather than right and wrong – IME the rope
from underneath encourages more bracing in the base of the neck than the
sidepull – but like everything I think it depends on the horse, the rider
and the situation.
