I think if the fit is a real problem, you'll know.  Look for the halter to
slip too close to his eyes, or to be too floppy in general...

Past that, I don't obsess too much about the fit of my rope halters.  It's
not like most of us have really hot TB's or previously abused horses that
are likely to go ballistic and run over us.  I think most of us probably
don't really "need" the knots on the rope halters.  My goal with my Parelli
groundwork has been to use the lowest phase of pressure that I can possibly
use.  In fact, I can usually use a plain web halter when I play the games
with mine.  I think maybe the rope halters are a little clearer when you're
starting the young horses, but after they are started,  I don't always use
the rope halters.

I do like that the rope halters aren't so bulky.  I sometimes like to ride
with a halter under the bridle, so if I stop, I can lead the horse by the
halter, not by the bit and/or reins.  Rope halters usually fit under a
bridle better than the nylon ones.
