Unfortunately, probably due to some very ignorant horseback riders (not equestrians), there is animosity towards horseback riders from some in the general public. Sometimes I don't know where the animosity comes from, just passed from person to person, but I ran into this qite a bit when I was a member of a hiking club. A lot of the hikers threw riders into the same basket as 4 wheelers. They resented the damage the horses did to the trails and unfortunately, when trail construction and maintenance days roll around there are no equestrians out there doing their part (that's their perception, anyway) I did a small part to change the mind of some people but it's a battle we fight everyday on the Trails Committee of the NC Horse Council. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but we need to try to educate other riders to do their part to be good trail stewards and if you camp, make sure it's "no trace left behind" camping. But, there is nothing you can do about the "all horse people are rich snobs" prejudice and I would bet that's the case in Renee's situation Laree
