I'd tend to think the opposite - that she reacts so strongly because she lives 
alone.  A lot of mares (at least non-Icelandics) will strike and squeal at any 
new horse, but they rarely do it once they are integrated into the herd.  In 
fact, a good many geldings will too.  Honestly, it didn't look that uncommon to 
me - just really sad that she lives alone in a small pen.
