I am still not 100% convinced that Dari doesn't have this allergy. I
had him stabled, really in a corral, in Arroyo Seco in Pasadena, So.
Cal for over a year when he was about 5-6 years old. He was living
in Santa Ynez before that. The stables were right next to the river.
He became allergic to something and rubbed a giant raw spot on his
chest overnight, he would rub his face raw also. He was not the only
horse at the stable with an allergy like this, a poor Appy had bumps
all over her entire body. He had been turned out where there were
trees and used a tree for a rubbing post. I had to start keeping him
in the pipe corral to keep him from doing this to himself. He never
had such a severe reaction after we left that area, I'm not sure how
it went away, he's much better in Kentucky, although I know we must
have the bugs here. I know there was a pond fairly close the barn at
my farm, so I'm not sure what it is. It was so upsetting to have a
horse in this condition, he was so itchy it was almost impossible to
ride him at that time. I feel sorry for the owners and the horses
who end up dealing with SE. I would be very reluctant to get an
imported Icelandic for this reason, maybe shipping out really
expensive semen might be an idea, instead of sending the actual
horses here, since it's not too likely that horses born here will
get this kind of thing. Does anyone in Iceland ship semen? Last time
I heard they were very reluctant to do this. I will watch Snorri, he
spent his first partial summer in Ky last year, I don't expect him
to develop any allergy as he is domestic.
