I dont want to have to buy a

Unless you want to hook up to a carriage, a surcingle and long lines
and whatever type bridle you want to use is all you need --- oh yeah,
a buggy whip is nice to have - just a tap to move them forward or
sideways. Be sure to decide on your commands and be consistant. Walk
On or Walk Up - I say Hoa instead of Whoa so it isn't confused with
Walk-- I use Right and Left (keeps it simple - I couldn't seem to
remember Gee and Haw in the heat of the moment), etc. I try to use
the same commands I might use if I was riding. One thing I do that my
friend taught me, that I think is helpful to the horse, is just before
I give a command - if it's a slowing down command, like Hoa, I put the
word And before it ( And, Hoa - if I was coming down from a trot to a
walk it would be And, Walk)) with a slight pause after the And and
before the command - also, I stretch out the And a little bit. If
it's a moving command I put their name before it with a pause - Tivar,
Walk Up; Tivar, Right; Tivar, Trot. I think that tells the horse to
pay attention because a change is coming and you aren't making them
nervous by surprising them all the time.
