Hi Janice, >I love jaspars canter, so easy going and pleasant, and since he is >pacey I like to bump him into that easy canter when others start >racking etc. But I dont like it when he gets going too fast and when >I haul on his mouth it makes him aggravated. How do you get them to >only go slow at a canter?
I agree that a one-rein stop is a silly idea to just slow them down - I have seen many horses confused when every time they started to go faster the rider used a one rein stop to slow them down. You might consider trying using something like the Balance rein that I think I sent you the article about ( I will post it to the Yahoo site as soon as I have a chance). That can be very effective in slowing a horse down at any speed and you are not pulling on the mouth. Speed at the canter is often a balance issue (another reason using a one rein stop is not such a good idea since it puts the horse out of balance). You can use different things for a balance rein.
