I think there's two different types of situations:

One the gaited horse that doesn't trot, because of his conformation and 
wiring.

The other is the gaited horse that has the ability to trot.

In the second situation, trotting a gaited horse can be good for them, can 
build up muscles that they wouldn't ordinarily use, and can be good for 
their gaits.

In the first situation, making a gaited horse trot, who isn't physically 
able to do so, probably isn't the best thing in the world.
