I guess it is just like everything else, someone who is very skilled makes things look easy and is very effective. Watching someone, less so, regardless of the method, and it may look clumsy and create results that are less than ideal. Clearly clicker training works since you can hardly train a whale using compulsion, unlike a horse or a dog, so you have to find a way to mark the behavior that you want. I think that the way some methods are used with horses and dogs work because they create a state of learned helplessness. Yes the horse or dog does what you want but can you really call it trust?
