>>> I did decide to ask them them to hold the complaint for 5 days, though, and they are going to be nice enough to do that. I then went to the stud owners house to talk to him and show him the complaint from the court. I told him that he had 5 days to pay all the vet bills and pay for the property damages (in cash). Also, he had to either move the horse to a more secure location in that time or prove to me that he had a vet lined up to geld the horse. I required that it be one of 3 local vets that I knew would be honest about it. He seemed very appreciative of the opportunity to make it right but we have heard this song from him before. Hopefully the threat of going to court hanging over his head will make him do what's right this time.
Laree, you are a model for rational and caring horse owners - ones who refuse to be patsies, but don't want to cause undue negative emotions where harm can come. Even if you move Doppa, and even if you never get a penny from this dude, you've done a good thing in letting him know how serious his macho-affliction is. If he still doesn't sell or geld the stallion, or fix his fences, you've at least lodged the first complaint on this subject with the courts. Too many elected/appointed government people aren't aware of the nuances of horse ownership, and you've done a good deed in educating one - or a few. And, you've done a valuable service by telling the list about your problem and how you are addressing it. I'm so sorry for what you and Doppa are going through (not to mention the poor stallion himself who didn't get to pick his owner) but at least you are doing things to help others not go through this, and to help anyone who does have a similar event happen. Thanks for sharing - and good luck! And I hope your own horse property is properly set up soon so that you can take her home, where you can have more control.
