i don't believe they are the same.  anemia is low red blood cells.  but for 
what i understand, iceys are not normally low in red blood cells.   rather they 
have a level of serum albumin (a major blood protein) that is right for them 
but would be low if it were a "big" horse.  
this has been discussed on an icey yahoo list, but maybe it was 
icehorsesworldwide?
i seem to remember hearing that stress can cause anemia, and it sure seems that 
shipping/quarantine could be quite stressful, especially for a horse who has 
only seen a remote farm in iceland.
