how does the zipcode on the hooves work, it grows out I assume? When
a hurricane is coming my way I always go out and take a bottle of
gentian violet and paint my area code and phone number on each side of
my horse in numbers so large it can be seen by a helicopter if they
are running down a highway. I did this because after hurricane andrew
I was watching CNN and a helicopter was videoing a small group of
horses running down the middle of the interstate while the news person
was saying "this is terrible, I wish we had some way of knowing how to
contact the owner"... so I bought glow in the dark ID tags from
www.saddleuptack.com also. But the gentian violet really works. No
amount of rain will wash it off and it has to grow out. I am not
being silly. I believe in horse ID with freeze branding, microchips
etc., but very seriously I am telling everyone that if it is a natural
disaster, you need to mark your horses in a way that can be seen from
a helicopter. because in a natural disaster when animals are loose,
like in Katrina, rescue groups are not able to get in by vehicle and
they use helicopters for search and rescue. And gentian violet is
cheap! and not toxic. Also important, put a phone number of where
you will BE, not a cell number or home number. because cell phones
are OUT in a natural disaster and you wont be home or if you are your
home may be rubble. So put a phone number where you will be
evacuating TO.
