If I leave the arena I use a crupper (round, witherless mare) and on trail rides I add the breast plate. Attach the crupper and be sure it is sitting nicely against the base of the tail, then slide your hand under it midway and turn your hand up and edge that's how much, or how little, slack you should have. Long Riders' has several good looking, reasonable, and well made choices. Nancy
