I think she's going on 4 years now--she started when she was 8 and she just turned 11 in January. After she had been taking lessons for a while she developed a strong fear (she fell off a few times) and didn't want to take any more lessons, her coach put her on a lunge and lunged her for months before she was ready to get back into regular lessons. When she started regular lessons again she was too afraid to canter so she didn't for a long time....even so, she still pested for a horse of her own. That's when my preference for Icelandics came into the picture and we found Gat. Alex took lessons on Gat for a summer before we purchased her, and she was still afraid to canter, but we bought Gat anyways. Not long after that Alex started to canter with Gat (and pace) and that fear vanished. Now she gets intimidated when she does jumps on school horses, but not with Gat. I think she has a great 'seat' and wish I could ride as good as she does. V
