Here is the summary of the Kompas television coverage as written in
Hestafréttur's english language site:

"The name of the man who mishandled the horse is Hilmar Hroason

"On the show Kompas that was aired tonight at Channel 2 there was a
tragic video of a man hitting his horse repeatedly and kicking him
under his belly and he also hits him many times in the head.
IcehorseNews discovered the identity of the man in question and his
name is Hilmar Hroason and he keeps his horses at Vatnsendi in Kopavogur.

"The reporter of IcehorseNews called Hilmar and asked him about this
horrible video and why he behaved in this manner. " I have no excuse
in this matter, it can be seen on the video which is not pretty to
look at and I greatly regret this, the horse in question is 12 years
old and he is the children's horse at the farm and I wanted to take
out his stubbornness" Hilmar said.

"Hilmar said he was not drunk as people on Kompas suggested but that
was the only thing he denied regarding this. Hilmar says he has six
horses at Vatnsendi and said they did not all receive the same
treatment as the children's horse at the farm did that time.

"When asked if he was going to turn himself in with the police due to
this case he said he would wait for an order from the police or the
district veterinarian.

"This is just how it is he said finally."

The actual tv coverage lasted 15 minutes and consisted of the footage
you have linked to as well as extensive commentaries by the
representatives of the Trainers' Association (FT) and the Horse
Farmers' Association amongst others.

>From what I could tell, no one was there to defend the behavior and
it caused a lot of concern, not controversy. Kompas excerpted the
laws against animal abuse and neglect. The Icelanders enforce their
regulations against abuse and neglect of horses. They do care about
the welfare of animals.

If anyone is interested in seeing the whole 15 minutes -- mostly
interviews -- all in Icelandic, the video is streamed at:

It is painfully slow. I have it and would post it on my site, but I
do not have permission from Kompas.

I hope this helps explain what went on.
