The key is where the reins are attached - if they are attached even with the mouthpiece, the bit is a snaffle. If the reins are attached at the end of the "long metal piece" (below the mouthpiece) then the bit is a curb. Curbs can have either broken mouthpieces or one-piece mouths, just as snaffles can.
