Actually they like to hide, and have such a gorgeous camoflage to
blend in w/ leaves on the ground, etc. So if you've come close enough
to them w/o seeing them, yes, they will defend themselves.  Aggressive
to me means a snake that will actually chase you--those would be
mambas and cobras, neither of which is in the US.
