When i started taking riding lessons at the age of 40-something the closest
barn was almost an hour away and was a hunter jumper facility. The instructor
had me jumping a course my second month and stuck me in a show with a bunch of
kids. It was very clear by the end of the show that it was all about money.
The more classes you do the more money they make so they were pushing us all to
compete when someone like me had no business jumping at all. I took a couple
of Christopher Reeve-like spills and left for another barn.
