You're probably asking the wrong person, since this is the first time I've ever used anything like this, but I NEVER do any type of schooling with it in the riding ring. If I do that kind of work, I will slip a snaffle back on.
I'm use the S-hack the way you might use a halter if you were riding with one. I direct him if I need to by squeezing with one hand or the other and make very brief (hand-closing) corrections to change his gait/speed. I really don't think you could train with it very effectively and you really don't have much control. Among the folks I ride with, this "bit" is used only on well trained horses who don't need much direction or correction to go down the trail. Nancy
