Actually they have wet sand on them making them (apparently) look dry.

No, we have flood irrigation so there is water in the pasture all summer. It 
barely gets dry before we flood it again. And the areas where the horses 
walk through gates become low spots that typically stay wet all the time. 
Our soil is sandy, so I guess you could say wet sandy soil.
