If they were on or near his shoulder, then wouldn't that mostly likely be an extension (or deviation?) of the shoulder barring that is usually associated with dun markings? Many (most?) donkeys have some primitive coloring similar to (or maybe exactly?) like dun. Buck has distinct shoulder barring. Since he's chestnut, it's easy to see that he's light red dun, and he does have a dorsal stripe, but if he were faded black, brown or bay, I'd think it could look like brindle.
