I don't really know what the braids are called but I did the same
thing for both the Hunter/Jumper show and the Dressage show.

I made each braid two fingers wide and braided waxed string in each
(used QuickBraid spray for controlling loose pieces), then I threaded
the dangling waxed string from the bottom up and under the braid at
the top then tying creating a loop in each  braid.

In the Hunter/Jumper shows the other riders then 'bumped' the braid
but I didn't with Gat because her braids were not equal length -- and
I wasn't going to cut it or pull it -- but the coach said it was fine
like that.  She looked very tidy and I think that's the goal.

Alex kept 'speaking' for Gat saying "I'm not a poodle!"....cute.
