I have a handy gadget for removing ticks and have used it forever ten years. I learned about it when going to a lecture on ticks, spotting them and learning which carry Lyme and which don't. it is by Pro-Tick Remedy and the head always comes out, the little buggers can crawl away if you are not too careful.
