Hi Susan:

I suggest that the first time you get on your horse you do it in a stall.
There will be no distractions; he can concentrate entirely on you.

The way I do it: I crawl up there slowly, listening to the horses reaction,
watching her ears. When I am up, I just stroke, hug and praise. Then I
wriggle around, so the horse has to shift her weight on her legs to balance
me. After that went well - and it always does - I get on in the round pen.
After that, horse is ready to trail ride with another trusted horse.
