In the late 1970's (I think) Jim Jones developed a cult following and
eventually led his flock out the USA to a country in Central America.  They
set up a settlement called Jonestown.  As the cult members families' began
complaining, the US officials began investigating, leading to a gory end.
At the end, many of the followers blindly followed Jim's last direction - to
drink the poison-laced Kool-Aid.  I think paper cups were found beside the
many, many bodies.  I can't remember how many died in the misguided mass
suicide.

Thus came the expression, "to drink the Kool-Aid"...
